Water treatment plants to check floods
The first phase of a Rs 42 crore project for the treatment of storm water drains was started in the Vrisbhabati Valley in Rajajajeshwari Nagar constituency area in the last week of October.
The project to be constructed on the Sabarmati model of Gujarat, would consist of 13 water treatment plants to be constructed in an area covering 6.5 km.

R. Ashok, Transport Minister and others visited the site on Tuesday. “Depending on the success of this project, it will be replicated in other places across the city,” he said.

The BBMP has taken into consideration the flooding around Mysore Road every year. “As the sewage flows into the drain, nearby residents complain of the foul smell. This has been a problem every monsoon,” said M Srinivas, MLA, Rajarajaeshwari Nagar.

“The project would cover Sumanahalli area near Magadi Road. The first phase of the pilot project amounting to Rs 17 crore begun in October will be completed in six months. Tenders have been invited for the remaining projects,” he said.

In a survey conducted by the BBMP in the area, it identified around 17 buildings, including a saw mill that had been encroaching the channel running from the Nayandahalli lake. Seven illegal structures have been demolished.

BBMP Commissioner S Subramaniyam said: “The project should be a model one which should be carried on throughout the city to safeguard the citizens from any flood related calamities.”
