Siemens Unveils New Dual-Action Ballast Water Management System at SMM 2008
Siemens Water Technologies is launching a new ballast water management system to the marine industry.
Used by itself or in conjunction with Siemens' Chloropac biofouling control technology, the Sicure system combines physical separation with a proprietary process of on-demand treatment with biocides produced in-situ from seawater. The dual-action system, which provides ballast water treatment and biofouling control, will be featured at the 2008 Shipbuilding Machinery & Marine Technology (SMM) International Trade Fair in Hamburg, Germany from September 23 to 26.

Ballast water management has become an increasingly important topic in recent years as organizations try to prevent invasive species from being carried around the globe via ballast water. In the near future, ballast water management issues will be controlled by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as well as national regulations.

The Sicure system is designed to provide efficient ballast water treatment even during the peak season of biological bloom, while adjusting itself when the bloom abates. Sicure system proprietary control logic regulates the system's parameters to provide the treatment efficacy, mandated by the pending IMO Convention for Ballast Water Management, while minimizing any impact on the environment and safety of the ship and its crew. Siemens based the design of its new ballast water management system on a proven 30+ year record and over 2,500 shipboard installations of the company's well-known Chloropac biofouling control technology.

Easy to maintain and safe to use, the Sicure system does not require the use (and thus, on-board storage) of chemicals. With an estimated operating cost of only US$0.02 - 0.03 per ton of treated water, the system is cost-effective. Additionally, the system's ability to produce biocide in-situ and on-demand minimizes corrosion and the potential formation of disinfection byproducts.

Water treatment equipment is an important part of Siemens Industry Sector's complete marine technology product offering. Siemens also specializes in the design, manufacture and commissioning of electrical equipment for all types of merchant vessels, naval vessels and submarines worldwide. This includes turnkey projects and conversions and covers the entire ship's life cycle.
